RFBO Received a $100,000 Donation From APMEX

APMEX, an online Precious Metals retailer based in Oklahoma City, is supporting the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s efforts to fight hunger and feed hope with a $100,000 donation. The Feeding America member serves 53 counties with programs that distribute hundreds of thousands of pounds of food each week.

According to the Food Bank, 17 percent of Oklahomans, or about 656,000 people, are food insecure (that is, they have limited availability of nutritionally adequate food). More than one million people in the state currently participate in federal assistance programs, although the average Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit per person amounts to roughly $4 a day.

APMEX president Scott Thomas says he knows first-hand what it’s like to struggle with food insecurity. Growing up, he worked at a pizza parlor as a teenager and would bring home leftover pizza for the family. “We ate pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner for what seemed like years. We had nothing else to eat,” he recalls. “It’s unacceptable that in 2015, one in four children and one in six seniors in Oklahoma struggle with hunger.”

Like the Food Bank, Thomas’ desire is to address underlying problems and find sustainable solutions. Gardening and education programs, a network of more than 1,200 charitable feeding programs and schools, and an annual operating budget below four percent ensure the Food Bank is driving viable, long term, hunger-relief solutions.

Every dollar donated to the Food Bank provides five meals; this contribution will supply 500,000, or about a month’s worth of meals. APMEX, which gives year-round to fight hunger, received an award in May for the largest donation of meals from a mid-size company for the Food Bank’s Feeding Hope campaign. The entire campaign surpassed the Food Bank’s goal, raising more than $8 million and 950,000 pounds of food.

“I believe in the Food Bank’s mission and ability to solve hunger in Oklahoma,” Thomas said. “We’re putting our money where food should be: in the mouths of our hungry neighbors, friends, classmates. We invite everyone to join us in this fight.”
