History of the Seated Liberty Dime
The Seated Liberty Dime was produced from 1837 to 1891. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it represented a shift from the earlier Capped Bust style. The obverse featured Lady Liberty seated on a rock, holding a shield in her right hand and a pole with a liberty cap in her left, symbolizing freedom and defense . The reverse displays a simple wreath encircling the denomination. Over time, design changes included the addition of stars, adjustments to the date size, and arrows added near the date to mark silver weight changes.
The Barber Dime replaced the Seated Liberty series in 1892 after the U.S. Mint, led by Director Edward O. Leech, initiated a redesign of American coinage to refresh its appearance following the expiration of the 25-year design period.

- 1839 O Reverse of 1838 O: A variety in which the 1839 dime was struck using the 1838 reverse die. This feature makes it highly collectible.
