History of the Liberty Head Double Eagle
The Liberty Head Double Eagle, introduced in 1849 (with regular commerce strikes beginning in 1850) and produced through 1907, represents a notable chapter in American numismatic history. While federal coinage had been authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, the Liberty Head Double Eagle emerged amid the gold surge of the California Gold Rush to become the first U.S. $20 gold coin issued for commerce.
Designed by James B. Longacre, this large coin bridged America’s transition from a developing nation into an economic powerhouse. Its debut symbolized not only newfound prosperity but also the nation’s ambition for large-scale commerce and global trade.
The obverse design features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” encircled by thirteen stars that honor the original colonies. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbols of war and peace. Over its nearly six-decade production, three distinct varieties were produced:
- 1849–1866: No Motto: early issues lacked “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
- 1866–1876: With Motto: added post–Civil War to reflect religious sentiment.
- 1877–1907: Revised Reverse: denomination changed from “TWENTY D.” to “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
The 1849 presentation or pattern piece is among the rarest U.S. coins, with only one confirmed and kept in the Smithsonian. Although some reports mention a second coin presented to Treasury Secretary William M. Meredith, its existence remains unconfirmed.
