History of the Lincoln Shield Penny
Minted from 2010 to November 2025, the Lincoln Shield Penny is one of America’s most recognizable coins. This penny is the culmination of the Lincoln Cent series, which began in 1909 to honor the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The Lincoln Cent series has seen several design updates, with the Shield Penny being the most recent version. This penny was designed by Lyndall Bass and sculpted by U.S. Mint artist Joseph F. Menna, who later became Chief Engraver of the Mint in 2019.
On November 12, 2025, the U.S. Mint ceased producing pennies for general circulation after the cost to manufacture each coin rose to roughly 3.7 cents. Billions of pennies remain in circulation and will continue to be legal tender; however, no additional cents will be struck for everyday use. Five pennies minted that day were sent to auction.
The obverse of the Lincoln Shield Penny features the familiar portrait of President Abraham Lincoln. The coin’s reverse, introduced in 2010, features a union shield with a scroll draped across it with the inscription “ONE CENT.” The 13 vertical stripes represent the 13 original states, with the horizontal bar above symbolizing the federal government, thereby emphasizing the unity of the states under a single national government. This design symbolizes President Lincoln’s commitment to preserving the United States as a united country during the Civil War.
Rarest Coins in the Series
The 2014-P Doubled Die Obverse (DDO) Shield Cent is one of the few recognized rare coins in this series. It shows noticeable extra thickness on the date and lettering. Collectors usually find this variety through careful roll searching or focused variety hunting; it seldom appears in everyday circulation. Modern minting practices make true doubled dies rare in the Shield Cent era. As a documented example, the 2014-P DDO draws steady interest from specialists who study modern varieties and die diagnostics.
Types of Collections
- Lincoln Shield Penny Series: This set includes all pennies minted from 2010 to the present with the distinctive shield reverse design. Collectors often focus on mint marks (P, D, S) and condition. There are also varieties, such as doubled-die obverse examples, to seek.
- Error and Variety Collections: Within the Lincoln Shield pennies, there are known varieties, such as doubled-die obverse errors, repunched mint marks, and die cracks, creating unique collectible coins. Collectors specializing in varieties seek these errors, which can demand a premium, especially in higher grades.
Beginner vs. Advanced Collecting
Beginner Collecting
The Lincoln Shield Penny is well-suited to new collectors because it was minted in large numbers from 2010 to 2025. Examples are easy to find in circulation, through dealers, or online. Beginners can focus on mint marks, sharp shield details, and basic errors such as doubled dies. Proper storage in holders helps prevent oxidation.
Advanced Collecting
More experienced collectors may pursue high-grade pieces, special-finish issues, and proofs from the U.S. Mint. Searching for top-condition examples or rare varieties adds challenge and depth. The series appeals to collectors who enjoy detailed study and precision grading.
Investment Potential
Most Lincoln Shield cents minted from 2010 to 2025 trade at or near face value, but certain proof issues and mint errors can sell for higher premiums, occasionally reaching hundreds of dollars at auction. Many Lincoln Shield pennies are professionally graded, and some special proof versions appeal to collectors.
