Gold Eagle Design
The obverse design showcases a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ artwork of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the background. The design is taken from the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold coin, which was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to create coins like the ancient Greek and Roman coins.
The reverse design, by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings.
The United States Mint has unveiled the new reverse designs for the 2021 American Eagle Gold coins. 2021 marks the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Coin program, and the new designs will begin appearing on these coins in mid-year 2021.
Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Jennie Norris created the new Gold coin design that was sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Renata Gordon. The new reverse design depicts a portrait of an eagle.
Gold Eagle Composition
American Eagles use the 22 karat standard established for Gold circulating coinage over 350 years ago. They contain their stated amount of fine Gold, plus small amounts of alloy. This creates harder coins that resist scratching, which can diminish the resale value of the coin.
Proof Gold Eagles
The collectible Proof Gold Eagle coin is one of the most beautiful Gold coins in the world. American Gold Eagle Proof coins are struck multiple times on specially prepared planchets to provide a unique finish that appeals to collectors. The dies used in this process give the Gold coins a mirrorlike appearance, with the coin’s device appearing to float over the liquid of the field, giving it a stunning finish that makes the Proof Gold Eagles sparkle and shine.
Burnished Gold Eagles
A burnished Gold coin provides a matte finish, giving off more details and the coin’s color. Burnished Gold coins have a finish with a frostier look and display more of the coin’s character in certain lighting. It is a lasting finish that is unique to American Gold Eagles. The effect is made possible by polishing the planchets before being struck.
Buying Gold Eagles
The U.S. Mint does not sell bullion coins directly to the public. Instead, they distribute their coins to a handful of authorized purchasers, like APMEX, who then sell the coins to the public. APMEX carries a wide selection of American Gold Eagles, including 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 oz Gold Eagles. Also, our variety includes Proof and Burnished versions, along with collectible sets and certified coins.
