What is a Reverse-Proof Coin?

A reverse-proof coin is exactly what you might expect it to be, it is the opposite of a proof coin. Instead of having a mirror-like finish in the field, the mirror-like finish is in the details. Collectors are notably attracted to reverse proof coins for their stunning appearance.

Reverse-proof coins are rather rare. They are usually produced for special releases. This makes them an interesting item to collect. A popular choice is the reverse-proof silver American Eagle. Another option is the Canadian Maple Leaf reverse-proof

How are Reverse Proof Coins Made?

The coins blanks, called planchets, are polished to create reverse-proof coins. The planchets are carefully inspected to ensure there are no imperfections. The dies are also specially prepared and are used to strike more than once to achieve the desired finish. The planchet is stuck using higher pressure than usual.

Before using computers and lasers, mint workers had to manually help produce these coins, making older coins rarer.

The finished product is carefully inspected for errors. Approved products are carefully packaged and most come with a certificate of authenticity (COA). The U.S. Mint produced its first reverse-proof coin in 2006. The 2006 reverse-proof silver and gold Eagles are sought after and a good year to collect.

Reverse-Proof Coins as an Investment

Reverse-proof coins have investment potential. The first benefit is that they have limited mintage making them rarer than their standard counterpart. The second advantage is their beautiful appearance. They are also inspected for perfection. They are often minted to celebrate an historic event adding to their collectability. Many are carefully packaged to protect their value. By carefully selecting coins based on mintage, condition, market demand, and historical relevance, investors may potentially achieve a profit.
