1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act Signed by the President

Historic 2021 Centennial Celebrated with Presidential Signature

OKLAHOMA CITY (January 11, 2021) – President Trump has signed into law a significant piece of legislation commemorating the centennial anniversary in 2021 of the transition from the Morgan to the Peace dollar. The 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act was officially enacted following the President’s signature on January 5, 2021.

H.R. 6192, which originated in the House on March 11, 2020, under the sponsorship of Representative Garland “Andy” Barr from Kentucky’s 6th congressional district, spearheaded this initiative.

The legislation, outlined in section four of the bill, outlined specific design requirements:

Morgan Dollar – The coins, paying homage to the 100th anniversary of the completion of the coinage of the Morgan dollar, featured obverse and reverse designs reminiscent of those historically used on the Morgan dollar.

Peace Dollar – Coins marking the 100th anniversary of the commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar also featured obverse and reverse designs inspired by the historical designs of the Peace dollar.

Designs for these coins were meticulously chosen by the Secretary, following consultations with the Commission of Fine Arts and reviews by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

This legislative milestone was passionately championed by two longstanding collectors: Thomas J. Uram, who serves as the chairman of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), and Mike Moran, another dedicated member of the CCAC.

Thomas Uram’s interest in numismatics dates back to 1971 when his Uncle Mitch introduced him to Gordon Doddrell of the Pittsburgh Coin Company. He joined the George Washington Numismatic Association and, within several years, became the first junior member elected to the board of directors, assuming the role of club secretary. In 1974, Tom became a lifetime member of the American Numismatic Association.

Mike Moran, an esteemed numismatic author, lecturer, and researcher, boasts numerous accolades in his career. His 450-page masterpiece, detailing the artistic collaboration between Theodore Roosevelt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, earned him the prestigious Robert Friedberg Award from the PNG. Mike’s journey into coin collecting began in the 1950s, inspired by his grandfather.

While U.S. Mint officials have hinted at various options, including coin issues from the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints, no official announcements have been made as of yet.
