The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Silver Dollar and Wall
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Silver Dollar Program was created to sell commemorative Silver Dollar coins with the surcharges on each coin sold to go towards the repair and maintenance of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. These coins were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the Wall.
The obverse of the coin has a hand touching the names on the Memorial Wall, which happens on a daily basis. There are a number of names that are displayed and many more are covered by the hand. Numerous panels of the wall are displayed and in the distance are the Washington Monument and trees. On the upper periphery is the word “LIBERTY” and below that is the date “1994”. To the right is the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the lower periphery explains that this scene is from the “VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL.” The obverse design was executed by John Mercanti.
The reverse of the coin depicts three military medals as used during the Vietnam War – the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal – as these three were often awarded to Vietnam Veterans. This reverse was designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. The upper periphery has “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” below it. The denomination “ONE DOLLAR” is on the lower periphery in two lines.
The 1994 Vietnam Veterans Memorial Silver Dollars, in Uncirculated and in Proof, were both struck at the West Point Minting facility and both bear a “W” mintmark. Although 500,000 coins were authorized across both the Uncirculated and Proof versions of the Silver Dollar less than 300,000 combined coins were struck.
