What is a ZI:SIN Medal?

The ZI:SIN medal series are gold and silver medals produced and issued by the South Korean Mint, the Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO). KOMSCO is responsible for circulating currency in South Kora, as well as South Korean bullion. The ZI:SIN series are captivating embodiments of Korean folklore and culture that feature intricate designs and low mintages.

ZI:SIN and Korean Folklore

In Korean culture, there are Four Guardians, one for each cardinal direction. Also known as Auspicious Beasts, each guardian signifies a different season and element and is associated with unique characteristics.

  1. Bai Seol, a white tiger who guards the west and is associated with autumn. Bai Seol represents courage, protection, and strength.
  1. Jujak, a red phoenix, guards the south and is associated with summer. Jujak represents prosperity, harmony, and re-birth.
  1. Cheongung is a blue dragon guarding the east and is associated with spring. Cheongung represents nobility, wisdom, and power.
  1. Hyonmu, a black tortoise, is the guardian of the north associated with winter. Hyonmu is said to represent wisdom, longevity, and protection.

The Guardians can be broken down into subdivisions that also represent intercardinal direction inspired by the lunar calendar. The ZI:SIN series is comprised of 12 designs, with one design for 12 Guardians and 12 issues planned for release by 2028. While the cardinal directions are represented by animals, the Twelve Guardians are represented as twelve humans with special powers or characteristics of an animal.

Although these are considered medals or rounds, as one ounce silver and one ounce gold products, they carry a face value of one clay and have one troy ounce of .999 fine silver or one ounce of .999 fine gold. They were also issued as one-tenth ounce As 10 ounce medals, the ZI:SIN series has a 10 clay face value. All of the ZI:SIN issues have the same obverse, which depicts the Gwi-myeon-wa, the shield carried by Chiwoo Cheonwang, as well as latent security features, the face value, and the year of issue. In legends, Chiwoo Cheonwang was one of three founding fathers of China and the 14th head of the first Korean state, Shinshi. The reverse of the ZI:SIN designs features the 12 Guardians.

Quick Guides to Investing

Step 1:

Why Buy Physical Gold and Silver?

If you are concerned about the volatility of the stock market, you’re not alone. The extreme highs and lows of the stock market often lead investors towards safe-haven assets, like bullion. Historically, the Precious Metals market has an inverse relationship with the stock market, meaning that when stocks are up, bullion is down and vice versa.

Step 2:

How Much Gold and Silver Should You Have?

This question is one of the most important for investors to answer. After all, experts suggest limits on how much of any types of investments should go into a portfolio. After deciding to purchase and own Precious Metals and considering how much money to allocate, one can then think about how much and what to buy at any point in time.

Step 3:

Which Precious Metals Should I Buy?

With the frequent changes in the market and countless Precious Metal products available, choosing investments can be difficult. Some want Gold or Silver coins, rounds or bars while others want products that are valuable because of their design, mintage or other collectible qualities. Also, collectors may shop for unique sets and individual pieces for their collections.

Step 4:

When to Buy Gold & Silver

After considering why, how much, and what Precious Metals products to buy, an investor’s next step is when to buy them. This decision requires an understanding of market trends and the impact of economic factors on precious metal prices.
