Oklahoma is One of the Hungriest States in the Nation
APMEX.com, a leading online Precious Metals retailer based in Oklahoma City, once again teamed up with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to fight hunger in the state. Through participation in the nonprofit’s annual Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers’ Food and Fund Drive, APMEX raised enough food and funds to provide 136,869 meals for Oklahomans who face hunger every day.
According to the Regional Food Bank, one in six Oklahomans lives with hunger or has limited access to enough food to lead a healthy life. This makes Oklahoma one of the hungriest states in the nation. The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to feed more than 136,000 Oklahomans every week but it is still not enough to fill the need.
APMEX Founder and President Scott Thomas knows what it is like to struggle with inconsistent access to food. As a teen, Thomas worked at a pizza parlor and brought home leftover pizza for his family to eat since they had nothing else. He believes no family should wonder where their next meal will come from.
“Being able to work with such an important organization, whether by donating meals or volunteering our time, is very important to me and my family, and this commitment to service has extended to the APMEX family. This is our fourth year to participate as a company by holding a weeklong food and fund drive. The friendly competition is a great way to raise funds, but we also pause throughout the week to remember our reason for doing this. For anyone willing and able to help, through donations or physically volunteering at your local Food Bank, I invite everyone to participate and make a difference in your community,” Thomas said.
To kick off the weeklong event, APMEX employees, family members and friends helped sort canned food and boxed goods received during the 26th annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 12. A total of 20,260 pounds of food were sorted by APMEX volunteers, accounting for 16,883 meals.
Every dollar donated to the Regional Food Bank provides four meals; this year, APMEX’s contribution collected during their food and fund drive will provide a total of 136,869 meals for Oklahomans who need it most. APMEX held many different contests during the week to raise money, ranging from raffles and silent auctions to costume contests and gaming competitions.
“As always, APMEX and its employees stepped in to help the Regional Food Bank meet the needs of Oklahomans living with hunger,” Regional Food Bank Chief Executive Officer Katie Fitzgerald said. “We are so thankful to APMEX for all they do to help us solve hunger.”
